一天的等待
他走進(jìn)我們房間關(guān)窗戶的時候,我們還未起床。我見他一副病容,全身哆嗦,臉色蒼白,步履緩慢,好像一動就會引起疼痛。
“你怎么啦,寶貝?”
“我頭痛?!?
“你最好回床上去睡。”
“不,我沒啥病?!?
“你先去睡。我穿好衣服來看你。”
可是當(dāng)我來到樓下時,他已穿好衣服,坐在火爐旁。這個9歲的男孩,看上去病得厲害,一副可憐的模樣。我用手摸了摸他的額頭,知道他發(fā)燒了。
“你到樓上去睡,”我說,“你病了?!?
“我沒有病,”他說。
醫(yī)生來后,量了孩子的體溫。
“多少度?”我問醫(yī)生。
“102度。”
下樓后,醫(yī)生留下用不同顏色
2、膠囊包裝的三種藥丸,并囑咐如何服用。一種藥退燒,另一種潤腸、通便,還有一種是去酸。他解釋說,流感細(xì)菌只能在酸性環(huán)境中生存。他似乎對流感很內(nèi)行,并說,如果發(fā)燒不超過104度,就用不著擔(dān)心。這是輕度流感,只要當(dāng)心不引起肺炎,就無危險。
我田到房里,記下孩子的體溫,并記下各種膠囊的服用時間。
“要不要讓我讀,點(diǎn)書給你聽?”
“好的,如果你想讀的話,”孩子說。他的臉色十分蒼白,眼窩下方有黑暈。他躺在床上一動不動,對周圍發(fā)生的一切漠然置之。
我朗讀霍華德·派爾的《海盜故事》,但我看得出他并不在聽。
“你感覺怎么樣,寶貝?”我問他。
“到目前為止,還是老樣子,”他說。

過了一會兒,他對我說:“你不必呆在這里陪我,爸爸,要是這事令你煩惱的話。”
“沒有什么可煩惱的。”
“不,我是說,要是這事終將給你帶來煩惱的話,你就不必呆在這里?!?
我想,或許他有,點(diǎn)兒神志不清了。11點(diǎn)鐘,照規(guī)定給他服藥后,我便出去了一會兒。那是個晴朗而又寒冷的日子,地上覆蓋著一層已結(jié)成冰的凍雨,就像那光禿禿的樹木,那灌木叢,那砍下的樹枝,以及所有的草坪和空地都用冰漆過似的。我?guī)е夷菞l幼小的愛爾蘭獵犬,沿

高高的土堤上長著倒垂下來的灌木叢,我們從那下面攆起了一群鵪鶉。當(dāng)它們快要從堤岸上消失時,我擊落了兩只。有幾只鵪鶉停落在樹上,但大部分飛散了,鉆進(jìn)了灌木叢。你得在這些被冰裹著的樹叢上跳上好幾下,才能把它們驚起。當(dāng)你在這些既滑又有彈性的樹叢上搖搖晃晃尚未立穩(wěn)之際,它們卻飛了出來,使你很難射中。我擊落了2只,卻被逃掉了5只。動身返回時,我感到很高興,因?yàn)槲以陔x家不遠(yuǎn)的地方發(fā)現(xiàn)了一群鵪鶉,而且還剩下許多,改日可再去搜尋獵取。
回到屋里

原來自上午9`點(diǎn)起,整整一天弛都在等死。
