She was expected to comfort him and keep up his spirits. Every Saturday the girl came on time to keep him company, telling him stories. When he was having an intravenous drip (靜脈滴注),she would help massage his arms. The doctor found the patient much improved mentally. The old man began to involve himself actively in the medical treatment and he seldom shouted at others. But something that happened made the doctor uneasy and puzzled. A month later the old man showed evident signs of decline after suffering coma(昏迷) a few times. When rescued from the latest coma, the old man told the doctor his last wish,“I have deep sympathy for the girl. C Researchers at the University of Kansas say that people can accurately judge 90 percent of a strangers personality simply by looking at the persons shoes.” Shoes convey useful information about their wearers,”the authors wrote in the new study published in the Journal of Research in Personality. Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someones shoes. In the study,63 University of Kansas researchers looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the studys participants. Volunteers in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire. Some of the results were expected:People with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier shoes were typically worn by outgoing people. However, some of the more specific results are strange enough. For example,“practical and functional”shoes were generally worn by more“pleasant”people, while ankle boots were more linked with“aggressive”personalities. The strangest of all may be that those who wore” uncomfortable looking” shoes tend to have “calm” personalities. And if you have several pairs of new shoes or take extreme care of them, you may suffer from“attachment anxiety”,spending lots of time worrying about what other people think of your appearance. There was even a political calculation in the mix with more liberal(主張變革的)types wearing” shabbier and less expensive” shoes. The researchers noted that some people will choose shoe styles to mask their actual personalities, but researchers noted that volunteers were also likely to be unaware that their footwear choices were showing the deep side of their personalities. 28. What does this text mainly tell us? A. Shoes can hide peoples real personalities. B. Shoes convey false information about the wearer. C. Peoples personalities can be judged by their shoes. D. People know little about their personalities. 29. The participants were asked to . A. provide pictures of their shoes B. look at pictures of different shoes C. design a personality questionnaire D. hand in their commonly worn shoes 30. Which of the results is beyond peoples expectation? A. Wealthy people often wear expensive shoes. B. Pleasant people like wearing uncomfortable shoes. C. Aggressive people are likely to wear ankle boots. D. Flashier shoes are typically worn by outgoing people. 31.People suffering from“attachment anxiety” tend to . A. wear strange shoes B. worry about their appearance C. have a calm character D. become a political leader D An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. A little after, the father again asked his son the 4th time,“What is this? ” This time the son shouted at his father,“Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again? ‘IT IS A CROW’. My son asked me 23 times what it was,and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question again and again for 23 times. Don’t worry if you are not a natural-born peacekeeper; you can gain this skill during life. ● Walk off. When the conflict is gathering pace and you can’t manage to control yourself, you should choose to handle the situation in another way. By all means, try to keep yourself away from stress. 40 You should get away from the situation for a while. A. The greatest victory is a battle not fought. B. Conflicts are unavoidable, so try to accept them. C. Weak people usually desire others to offer help and support. D. Let other people solve their problems without your presence. E.
