Show students a piece of music about Christmas 2. Make Ss guess what the music is about Step Ⅲ: Pre-reading 1. Introduce the background knowledge: the origin of Christmas: Christmas is the day to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ 2. Make Ss familiar with some Christmas vocabulary: (1) divide Ss into four groups (2) show Ss 12 pictures related to Christmas (3) ask Ss to speak out which words these pictures stand for group by group Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 balloons presents snowmen Christmas tree Christmas stockings Christmas carols Father Christmas Christmas cakes Christmas pudding turkey Christmas hat Christmas candies Step Ⅳ: Reading: 1. Fast Reading: (1) Ss skim the text and think about the following questions: 1) What kind of order does the writer use in the text? Time, space or logic order? 2) How many parts can the text be divided into? And how? (2) Choose some Ss to voice their opinions about the above two questions; (3) Guide Ss to clarify the structure of the text: Time order Part 1(Para.1-Para.2) before Christmas Part 2(Para.3) on Christmas Eve Part 3(Para.4-Para.5) on Christmas Day 2.Intensive Reading: (4) Part 1: 1) choose two groups of Ss to read Para.1 and Para.2 and try to finish the table on the screen 2) let the other two groups finish the following table Para.1 Para.2 general ideas Activities and things before Christmas (5) Part 2: 1) Ss prepare for the questions on the screen while teacher reading Para.3 2) Ss answer the questions group by group: 1. Consolidation: (1) Look at Ex.3 in the book (2) Finish the diagram by putting the sentences in right order. Step Ⅴ: Post-reading----Speaking 1. Ss discuss in pair to prepare for a dialogue about Christmas and the Spring Festival. 2. Show students some pictures about the Spring Festival words. 3. Ask some students to present their dialogue. Step Ⅵ: Summary We go further to learn more about an important western festival — Christmas. Compare Christmas with Spring Festival. We can feel the atmosphere of Christmas in advance.
