111 Module 2 No Drugs Introduction Teaching Aims: To let the students have a good knowledge about the present situation of smoking. After the related numbers and terrible results, they may have a firm attitude against it and pay more attention to public health. Teaching Important Point: Enable them to have a firm belief against smoking. Teaching Difficult Point: To impress them deeply with some facts of smoking. Teaching Procedures: Step 1 lead –in T: Now class, we have finished Module1, .Would you please tell me what you have learned in the last module? Ss: We learned about our body and healthy habits. T: Yes. So if we want to keep healthy, we should develop a good habit of life style. It is much easier to fall into bad habits than to form some good ones. Once you have had some habits , it will not be easy for you to get rid if them, for example, smoking. Almost all of us know it is not good for our health to smoke, even those heavy smokers, but there are still millions of new smokers each year and they won’t give it up. Now today let’s have a talk about smoking. Step 2 Introduction T: Has any of you ever tasted smoking? I have a pack of cigarettes here, and who wants to have a smoke? (Show a pack of cigarettes, and of course, no smoking is allowed here.) Some thinks that smoking is so cool, especially for the young and ladies , do you think so? S: No. I don’t think so. It’s unhealthy. T: How many cigarettes are smoked each day in the world? ( For these questions, the teacher may let them have a guess at first, and then they would be so surprised at the huge numbers, which will be helpful for them to know how serious the situation is now. ) T: Now let’s have a quiz to see whether your guesses are right or wrong. ( Show the following in the screen and let the students decide on them. They may discuss with their partner so that the numbers may impress them more deeply. Choose the answers you think are correct. 1. During the 1990s. (21 thousand/21 mullion) people died as a result of smoking cigarettes. 2. A quarter of young people who smoke more than (10/20) cigarettes a day will die prematurely as a result of smoking. 3. In the United Kingdom, smoking causes (12,000/21,000) deaths a year. 4. Thirteen people die every hour/every day from illnesses related to smoking tobacco, such as cancer, bronchitis and heart disease. 5. Every year, about (20/200) people are killed and (200/2,000) are seriously injured in fires caused by smoking. Why do people smoke cigarettes? 2. Where do people smoke? Where can’t they smoke? 3. Is there any anti-smoking advertising in China? Let the students discuss this topic in groups of three or four , and give you four minutes. After that show your ideas. The teacher may give them some suggestions. 1. 1) Some think it is cool. They need something to calm themselves and kill time. It is a way of showing off. 2. People may smoke in the area which is allowed, but some people continue to smoke regardless of others’ objections. They can’t smoke in the public places and in the smoke-free area. 3. Yes. First of all, every package carries a warning: Smoking is bad for your health. No advertisements of cigarettes can appear in any forms of media. Step 6 Summary and Homework In this period we talk about an unhealthy habit --- smoking. Smoking is harmful to our health. I do hope for the health of you and your family. Please don’t smoke. We are young and full of hopes and energy. We should concentrate ourselves to our studies and work and serve the people heart and soul.
