Jane Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire and the second daughter and seventh child in a family of eight. She was mainly educated at home, benefiting from her fathers library. Her closest friend was her only sister, Cassandra. Though Austen lived a quiet life, she had unusual access to the greater world, mainly through her brothers, Francis and Charles, officers in the Royal Navy, who served on ships around the world and saw action in the Napoleonic Wars. As a child Austen began writing ic stories, now referred to as the juvenilia(少年時(shí)代作品). Her first mature work, written when she was about 19, was a novella(中篇小說), Lady Susan, written in epistolary(書信體的) form. This early fiction was preserved by her family but wasnt published until long after her death. In her early twenties Austen wrote the novels Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice, one of her best-known novels, which was finished in 1797. When Austen was 25 years old, her father retired, and she and Cassandra moved with their parents to Bath. During the five years she lived in Bath, Austen began one novel, The Watsons, which she never pleted. In 1811, Austen published Sense and Sensibility, which identified the author as “a Lady”. Pride and Prejudice followed in 1813, Mansfield Park in 1814, and Emma in 1815. For some reason, all of them were published not using her name. Austen began writing the novel that would be called Persuasion in 1815 and finished it the following year, by which time, however, her health was beginning to fail. Austen died on July 18,1817 because of her illness and a few days later she was buried in Winchester Cathedral. 8.All the following were pleted by Jane Austen EXCEPT ________. A.Lady Susan. B.Persuasion. C.The Watsons. D.Emma. 答案與解析:C 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第三段第三句可知,小說The Watsons一直沒有完成。 9.We can learn from the last paragraph that ________. A.the Austens moved to Bath for the benefit of Janes health B.Jane Austen felt upset because her novels werent recognized C.Sense and Sensibility was published using the name of Jane Austen D.Pride and Prejudice was published sixteen years after it was pleted 答案與解析:D 推理判斷題。 10.What would be the best title for the passage? A.Jane Austens Early Life B.Jane Austens Great Works C.Way to Success for Jane Austen D.A Brief Introduction to Jane Austen 答案與解析:D 標(biāo)題概括題。 Easy Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp Everyone is forgetful, but as we age, we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit — and that can be a very annoying thing. __11__ Read on for some techniques worth trying. 1.__12__ People who regularly made plans and looked forward to uping events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimers disease (早老性癡呆癥), according to a recent study. __13__ Something as simple as setting a goal to have a weekly coffee date with a friend will do. Nowadays, with the growth of the Internet, many teenagers are addicted to online games. They usually spend long hours in front of puters in their spare time. The longterm use of puters causes many students to suffer loss of memory. Their interest in studying also drops greatly. How can we get teenagers back to a normal life? I think it a good idea to help them form the habit of reading. On the one hand, reading can broaden teenagers horizons. On the other hand, reading can deepen their understanding of the events happening at home and abroad. Besides, they will get good grades in their exams. Lets pick up a book and read!
